JOHN A. WASIK wrote on the Regions 20-29: Region 21 wall: Travel Report Columbus/Ohio, USA 11/5/2018 I am Boris Mesic a German police officer. Since 20 years now I am a member of the state police of Bremen. I am a detective at our Counter-terrorism Unit. And I am also am member of the International Police Association. Bremen is the smallest state of Germany with approximately 700.000 citizens. This June and July my family and I spent our vacation in Columbus/Ohio because we have relatives who are living in Dublin/OH not far away of Columbus. I heard a lot of good things about visiting a foreign police department so I wanted to try it by myself now. So I filled in the travel information form of the IPA and sent it to our German IPA section. Of course, it was very curious how everything would work out. I also wondered if my English skills would be enough for this visit. After some time, I received a very nice e-mail from the US section of the IPA. I was told the phone number of Ken Decker of the police of Columbus (CPD), who should be my contact person for the visit and with whom I should clarify everything else. The contact was straightforward via Whats-app and I immediately had the feeling of being welcome. Ken immediately made me feel like he was taking care of my visit. He inquired about my interests and also had many ideas of what we could do there. We quickly realized that a single day would not be enough. On June 28th it was time. About Amsterdam and Detroit we went to Columbus, where we arrived late in the evening. Already for the next morning my first meeting with Ken was planned. As agreed, Ken picked me up at 11:15 am at the hotel. I introduced him briefly to my family, handed over a few gifts and then it started. To start off, we drove to lunch in the German restaurant "Schmidt's" in the German Village of Columbus. On the way to the restaurant we were able to get to know each other personally for the first time and my feeling from the chat process was confirmed. We got along very well right from the start and I was able to put my English skills to the test on the trip. Fortunately that worked quite well. Ken's friend Bill, a US Air Marshall, and his friend Steve were waiting for us in front of the "Schmidt's". Together we had lunch and talked. I learned that Steve is the Asst. Deputy Director of Security & Safety at the Ohio Statehouse and Bill is a collector of police memorabilia and has contacts with police officers all around the world. I felt right at home with my three companions and was looking forward to the further activities of the day. After lunch we drove to the Ohio Statehouse. Steve showed us around and explained very interesting details about the history of this imposing building. He also showed us areas that visitors usually do not get to see. After this great experience, we said goodbye to Steve and drove on to the house of Bill. [For the complete Travel Report, watch for the article in the IPA USA Newsletter.]
