Virtual Officer Down 5K To Benefit IPA CANCELLED

Hello everyone.  As many of you may have seen the IPA US Section had partnered earlier this year with the group called OD5K to help support their virtual run as a way to raise funds for the IPA US Section’s training program. A few people who saw the IPA posting, including members, friends, and other supporters, had signed up for the virtual run to help support the IPA US Section and our growing training program. We thank you for the support of the IPA and the training program.

As those of you that had signed up know by now, the group running the race has encountered a few legal issues of late that steam from a previous in-person run event.  When considering the virtual run as a way raise funds for the self-funded training program, I personally looked into 9 different events that the OD5K run group had sponsored over the previous 2 years. In speaking to representatives from each of these events I had received all positive feedback. These groups included police departments, Fraternal Order of Police, and other police support groups who all had positive interactions with the OD5K organization from their race ventures.

Each of you who registered for the run should have been notified by email by now that the online run organizer group used to sign up for the event has since cancelled the 2018 Virtual 5K run, and all other events linked with the OD5K event. I am working with the owner of the group and his attorney on a time line for refunds for our run registration fees. I am told that we will be notified shortly of the plan of action and when these refunds will take place. Please be patient as we get through this unfortunate situation.

I will continue to work with the coordinator and his attorney and keep all those impacted up to date. If you paid with a credit card you can contact your credit card company to see if they would reverse the charges for the event because you have not received the services you paid for to date and have been advised that the event has been cancelled.

I know a few of you are still planning on doing the event as a show of respect for the officers lost in the line of duty and to support the IPA.  I think this is a great idea and would ask anyone who chooses to do this please post photos of yourself doing this on the IPA US Section web page.

Based on the amount of interest that was seen for this event I have formed a small committee of IPA members to look into the possibility of doing a similar event either later this year or in 2019 as a fundraiser for the training program and other officer charities that I would ask you to consider forwarding to me for consideration if the event would take place and be completely facilitated by the IPA.

Thank you for understanding and if you have concerns please contact me at the email below.

Waiting for a refund ... leaves a bad taste for the next time someone wants to organize a run or some other benefit ..

I paid for two participants, my daughter and myself. On May 1st we will run our own 5K and wear some form of Police Related T-Shirts in the honor of fallen Officers. We intend to take photos and post them on the IPA Facebook Pages of both the National and our Local Region 48. As long as our entrance fees find their way to the ODMP I'll be happy with that.

I wish the Virtual Officer Down 5K event had been properly vetted before passing along this event to members. I signed up for the event and it has now been canceled due to lack of funding.
